Revamping My Watch Collection: New Year’s Resolutions for 2026
Last year, I shared my goals for my watch collection, and I even toyed with a bold resolution: letting go of my beloved Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Medium Duoface in favor of a Ressence Type 9. I noted that it might be more of a long-term plan, and it turns out, that’s exactly how it played out—nothing changed in my collection last year. However, my desire to add contemporary watches is still alive and kicking, though I think I need to take a more measured approach than I initially anticipated.
Reflecting on My Collection Changes
Before diving into future plans, let’s take a moment to reflect on what happened in my watch collection over the past year—beyond the occasional Swatch addition. The biggest change was the introduction of the Seiko 6105-8000. While I loved my Seiko SPB317, it ultimately made me crave its vintage counterpart even more. I even shared the story of my trade, which involved swapping my SPB317 for a vintage Montblanc 242 fountain pen. Now, I proudly own a stunning 1968 Seiko 6105-8000 diver.
Aside from that, my Cartier Santos Galbée XL remains my go-to watch, along with my Rolex Explorer 114270, Omega Speedmaster 3861 Hassalite, and Breguet 5907. The Serica 5303-3 also stands out as a fantastic diver, and I can’t part ways with the Autodromo Intereuropa in Nassau Blue. However, this shift meant I wore my Reverso significantly less last year. While it’s a fantastic piece, I think it’s time to let it go. So, what’s on the horizon?
Charting the Course Ahead
My attraction to contemporary watches is only growing. At events, I get excited about designs from brands like Ressence, MB&F, Behrens, and Pragma. However, not every watch is within my budget, which has held me back from making significant changes in my collection last year. Therefore, I’m considering more affordable contemporary options as a starting point—let’s explore some watches that have recently caught my eye!
I’m completely taken with SpaceOne’s Jump Hour watch, but unfortunately, all series are sold out now. I realize I should have acted sooner. On the other hand, I find the Toledano & Chan B/1 intriguing, although it’s a bit larger than I’d prefer. The brand is reportedly creating a smaller size, so I’m eager to see how that fits. Christopher Ward has some appealing models too, like the C1 Bel Canto, C1 Jump Hour, and C12 Loco. Despite their quality, I find myself less attracted to their styles.
Last year, I also explored the innovative Maghnam Noor and Mohareb. Their designs may not be everyone’s cup of tea, as they’re somewhere between SpaceOne and MB&F. While they certainly turn heads and spark conversations, I find them a tad too futuristic for my taste.
Exploring More Plausible Options
Then there are watches that I find utterly charming and consider realistic options for my collection. Otsuka Lotec is one such brand, known for their contemporary designs at reasonable prices. They can be hard to find, so acquiring one might require some effort or searching for pre-owned pieces. Regardless, it remains on my radar.
Another commendable brand is Ming. I never truly appreciated its following until I had the chance to try on some models at a recent gathering at Ace Jewelers in Amsterdam. Specifically, the new 37.11 Odyssey stood out to me. Its combination of outward-facing lugs, titanium case, and creative dial is truly appealing. It may not be extremely contemporary, but it strikes a nice balance.
Additionally, I spotted the M.A.D.Editions M.A.D.2, designed by Eric Giroud, during that gathering. While I only saw it from afar, Ace has a pre-owned option available, which I’m considering checking out next week. The jump-hour complication and unique design appeal to me, but I’m a bit wary of its 42mm diameter. We’ll see what happens.
Preparing to Move On from the Reverso
As you can see, my plans are still taking shape. A big part of that is because my Reverso still occupies a space in my collection. I believe I need to tackle the challenge of selling it first before I can fully immerse myself in exploring new options. That’s the first action item on my agenda as soon as I return from my Christmas break in Spain. Once that’s done, I’ll have clearer mental space to focus on potential new additions.
Now, I’m curious about you! What are your New Year’s resolutions for your watch collection? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and if you have any recommendations for contemporary watches I should consider, I’d love to hear them!
