Discover Project Tai Yu: A Bold Tribute to Chinese Horology by Independent Atelier
Independent Atelier may be a new name in the watchmaking world, but its inaugural project carries a rich history that sets it apart from the start. Instead of launching with flashy contemporary designs or attention-grabbing statement pieces, this platform focuses on research. Its debut piece, Project Tai Yu, embodies a significant moment in independent watchmaking that many have yet to fully appreciate.
A Unique Aesthetic That Tells a Story
At first glance, Project Tai Yu may feel like an enigma. Its design is unapologetically Chinese, and for some, thatmight seem unfamiliar or even off-putting. There’s no effort to dilute or neutralize its distinctive style for a wider audience. It’s very much a “if you know, you know” kind of watch. Yet, as the story behind it unfolds, the design transforms from a curiosity into something logical and meaningful. What seems challenging at first gradually becomes the essence of its depth.
A Tribute to a Pioneer in Watchmaking
Project Tai Yu serves as a homage to Kiu Tai Yu, the first Chinese member of the AHCI and a foundational figure in Chinese independent watchmaking. It’s crucial to clarify what this project is not: it is not a revival brand, nor does it attempt to modernize or reinterpret Kiu Tai Yu’s work. Independent Atelier views it as an act of continuity, reintroducing an individual and his remarkable legacy while preserving its original character.
Discovering a Watchmaker’s Legacy
Kiu Tai Yu’s name circulates quietly among collectors and independent watchmakers. Often, conversations are filled with admiration for his unique approach but also frustration, as few have had the opportunity to see his watches in person. Kiu started working largely in isolation, long before Chinese independent watchmaking gained international recognition. Though he never produced watches in significant numbers, his creations, often crafted using handmade components, conveyed a unique vision that defied market expectations.
A Decade-Long Quest for Authenticity
Project Tai Yu began not as a commercial endeavor but as a quest driven by respect. For over ten years, founder Benjamin Hui searched for original pieces of Kiu Tai Yu’s work, eventually acquiring two watches, including a Millennium piece that would later influence this project.
“For more than 13 years, I have admired Master Kiu Tai Yu,” Hui shared. “After tracking down two of his watches, I understood how pivotal his work was in shaping my appreciation for independent watchmakers.”
Investigating Before Innovating
Rather than keeping these watches to himself, Hui treated them as study materials. Together with fellow GPHG Academy member Zhang YuXin, he meticulously examined the original Millennium movement, not to replicate it, but to understand its design and construction.
“I realized how rare his watches are and how much collectors would treasure owning a part of his story. That motivated me to share this passion and bring the watch and its movement back to life,” Hui explained.
Blending Tradition with Innovation
This emphasis on understanding is the backbone of Project Tai Yu. The newly designed movement, IATY-01, retains the original’s visual essence while integrating subtle enhancements for reliability and long-term performance. “While reverse-engineering the movement, I recognized how ahead of his time Master Kiu was,” Hui noted. “He crafted his own components for the movement, showcasing a visionary approach.”
Introducing Independent Atelier
Project Tai Yu is not only a tribute but also an introduction to Independent Atelier itself. Founded by Benjamin Hui and a group of fellow GPHG Academy members, the atelier aims to nurture small-scale, research-driven projects that often fall outside conventional brand structures.
This collaborative platform provides established watchmakers the freedom to explore ideas without constraints while offering emerging creators a supportive environment to innovate without immediate commercialization pressures. Rather than relying on marketing jargon, Independent Atelier allows Project Tai Yu to speak for its mission.
A Watch Craftsmanship Rooted in Restraint
Visually, Project Tai Yu aims to stay true to its origins. The dial layout, inscriptions, and typography mirror the design of the original Millennium watch. The Suzhou-style time display uniquely combines traditional and simplified Chinese characters with Roman and Western Arabic numerals, reflecting both cultural heritage and personal identity.
Luxury with Purpose
Crafted from 18K yellow gold, the case possesses a modest size of 35mm in diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug, and just 11.2mm in profile. The sapphire crystals on both sides, along with a black-and-red Jeayou leather strap, completes the piece with elegance.
Limited Availability, Lasting Impact
Limited to just 25 pieces, Project Tai Yu stands as more than just a commercial product. It’s an opportunity to engage with a watch that encapsulates cultural specificity, historical significance, and a perspective that avoids mainstream appeal. If it contributes to the legacy of Kiu Tai Yu, then it has served its purpose well.
The price for the Independent Atelier Project Tai Yu is CHF 30,500. While it’s not a budget-friendly option and caters to devoted fans, these pieces will undoubtedly find eager collectors.
