Top Solar-Powered Watches of 2025: Bright Options for Every Style
At Fratello, we primarily focus on the world of mechanical watches, but we can’t help but get excited about the latest solar-powered innovations. These watches are practical “grab-and-go” timepieces, always running and equipped to handle everyday challenges. Major brands like TAG Heuer, Seiko, and Tissot have embraced this trend, offering a wide array of options. Let’s explore some of our standout solar-powered watches of 2025!
A Banner Year for Solar-Powered Watches
This year has been particularly fruitful for solar watches. TAG Heuer launched an impressive solar-powered Formula 1 collection, Tissot rolled out the new PRC 100 model, and Seiko wowed fans with limited-edition Speedtimer chronographs. Let’s take a closer look at these exciting releases!
TAG Heuer: Solargraphs for Everyone
TAG Heuer has an impressive lineup of Aquaracer models powered by the Solargraph movement. One standout is the 40mm titanium version, which already featured a sleek black dial. This year, they expanded the collection with a stunning ice-blue dial option. Priced at €3,300, it may be on the higher end, but its lightweight case and vibrant dial make it an ideal summer accessory—especially as it recharges while you relax poolside!
The highlight of TAG Heuer’s year was undoubtedly the launch of the new Formula 1 Solargraph collection. These colorful 38mm re-editions generated a lot of buzz, featuring bead-blasted stainless steel cases and various configurations. While some models are part of regular production, others are limited editions that released during Formula 1 events. Each piece ranges from €1,800 to €2,050, making them a fun choice for sports enthusiasts!
Tissot PRC 100 Solar: The Lightmaster
Tissot made a splash with its new PRC 100 Solar. While not their first solar-powered watch, it does incorporate the Swatch Group’s innovative Lightmaster technology. This allows light to be captured by wafer-thin, hexagon-shaped solar panels embedded in the sapphire crystal, freeing the dial design from traditional solar-cell limitations.
Tissot debuted the PRC 100 in a 39mm stainless steel model with blue or silver dials. They also released a black PVD-treated version. A later launch included a 34mm variant that comes with different dial options, including silver and ice-blue. Style enthusiasts can also select from a yellow gold-PVD-coated model or a steel and rose-tone variant. Prices start at a budget-friendly €445 for the strap version and reach up to €595 for the gold-tone bracelet version.
Seiko SSC955 and SSC959 Speedtimer Chronographs
SSC955 celebrates the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25. Its striking Edo purple dial, inspired by the event’s official colors, pairs beautifully with darker purple sub-dials. Limited to just 6,000 pieces, this watch is available for around €770, if you can find one!
Among my favorites is the SSC959 Speedtimer European Limited Edition. With its cream dial and sleek steel bezel, it’s visually stunning. Limited to just 3,000 units, this watch retails for €860 and includes an additional brown leather strap for versatility.
Seiko’s Astron Collection: The Ultimate Solar Experience
If you’re in search of the ultimate solar-powered, GPS-connected timepiece, look no further than Seiko’s Astron collection. Recently, they unveiled two limited editions, the SSH187 and SSJ039, featuring stunning galaxy-inspired dials. Both pieces come with a titanium case and bracelet, coated for scratch resistance, and are priced at €3,000 and €2,500, limited to just 1,500 units each.
Casio G-Shock GW-BX5600-1: MIP Display Innovation
If you’re a G-Shock fan, you might have heard about their latest release, the DW-5000R-1A. This model is a nostalgic nod to the original DW-5000C from 1983, updated with modern tech but without solar capability. For a more retro aesthetic combined with solar functionality, consider the GW-BX5600-1. Its classic design is enhanced by a Memory-in-Pixel (MIP) display, providing excellent contrast and a wider viewing angle.
This new display type allows you to see traditional seven-segment digits or experiment with a fresh typeface if you’re feeling adventurous.
