Revive Your MoonSwatch: A Simple Guide to Battery Replacement
If you were lucky enough to snag a MoonSwatch when they first launched, it’s likely that your watch’s battery is running low or has already died. That awkward moment is here: how do you replace the battery? Is it a tricky task, and what battery do you need? Worry not—we’ve got you covered!
Understanding Your MoonSwatch Battery
Unlike its classic counterpart, the Omega Speedmaster Professional, the Swatch MoonSwatch operates on a battery. While many watch enthusiasts prefer mechanical movements, there’s a solid case for battery-powered quartz watches—they keep accurate time and run smoothly. However, when the battery runs out, things get a little tricky. Unlike mechanical watches that may gradually show signs of wear, a dead battery leaves you in the dark.
Changing Your MoonSwatch Battery
Wondering what to do next? Instead of diving into YouTube tutorials, let’s walk through the process using my Mission to Mars as an example. I was among the fortunate ones to buy a MoonSwatch on its launch week. Yes, I paid full price, but it was worth the experience. Fast forward to now, and my watch’s battery finally gave out a few months ago.
The MoonSwatch’s Enduring Popularity
Since the initial launch of 11 models in 2022, the MoonSwatch lineup has expanded significantly. From the original missions representing celestial bodies, we now have diverse variant themes including Missions to Moonshine Gold, Moonphase, and even Earthphase. Let’s not forget the homage to the original Omega Speedmaster’s 1965 space-flight qualification. Clearly, the MoonSwatch isn’t just a fleeting trend; it’s here to stay!
Swatch Boutiques to the Rescue!
Now, back to my Mission to Mars with its dead battery. As my colleague Daan previously noted, replacing your MoonSwatch battery isn’t a DIY job. A qualified watchmaker, jeweler, or any Swatch boutique can do it for you—often on the spot and totally free! Not everyone knows this handy tip, so we wanted to highlight it, especially as your MoonSwatch may soon need a new battery. This service applies to all Swatch watches, not just the MoonSwatch.
Instead of fretting over battery types and replacement tips, I opted to pay a visit to the Swatch boutique on the renowned PC Hooftstraat in Amsterdam. This location is packed with high-end boutiques, and Swatch offers a refreshing contrast among the more serious shops. While I enjoyed browsing new models and exploring replacement straps, the staff swiftly replaced my watch’s battery, and just like that—it was done!
DIY for the Brave
For those without easy access to a Swatch boutique, we totally get it! If you feel confident in tackling the battery replacement yourself, all you need is a fresh 394 silver oxide battery and a small screwdriver to pop off the battery lid—the mission logo on the back of your MoonSwatch. Removing and replacing the battery is straightforward, and the cover locks back in place easily. Still, nothing beats the charm of visiting a Swatch boutique!
