The Ultimate Guide to Car Watches: What to Wear Behind the Wheel
Welcome back to another exciting episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we’re diving into the fascinating world of car watches—a unique niche in the horological hobby that merges the thrill of driving with fine timepieces. While the automobile industry boasts a colossal following, partnerships between watch and car brands often fall flat. This raises an intriguing question: what should you wear when you’re behind the wheel or attending a car-related event? Let’s explore the best options together!
In this week’s episode, we tackle a thought-provoking subject for many enthusiasts. Car watches have been an integral part of wristwatch design since the beginning. From angled dials that help drivers tell time at a glance to the classic chronograph, these accessories have a rich history in motorsports. However, many pieces can feel overly branded or only appeal to fans of specific car makers. So, what should you consider when choosing a watch for your driving adventures or events?
Handgelenkskontrolle: What’s on Our Wrists
As we kick off the show, we chat about the sweltering heat and the dire need for air conditioning. The World Cup has us reminiscing about great food and cultural experiences as visitors flock to America. The Scots, in particular, have charmed everyone! In terms of travel, our co-host Balazs recently returned from Los Angeles, where he organized a gathering with friends from the Spirit of Time podcast at a Pasadena brewery. Nearly 60 watch enthusiasts shared their love for timepieces. Meanwhile, Mike attended the Icons of Porsche: Sunstede Silverstone Edition event, celebrating Porsche’s 75th anniversary in the UK—a true showcase of automotive culture. These experiences naturally steer us toward our main topic: car watches!
For our weekly “Handgelenkskontrolle,” Balazs showcases his cherished Rolex GMT-Master 1675—a beloved companion for his trip to California. Mike, meanwhile, is sporting a vintage chronograph: his Lemania-powered Meylan, complete with a decimal scale.
Exploring the World of Car Watches
When you scan current and past horological catalogs, it’s apparent that car watches are everywhere. From watch brands sponsoring racing teams to partnering with luxury car manufacturers, the market is flooded with options. However, most of these collaborations can come off as tacky or overly branded. Following the Porsche event, we found ourselves contemplating the ideal timepieces to enjoy alongside petrolhead culture. We both agree that Heuer stands out as the unrivaled leader in motorsport-inspired timepieces. Interestingly, the Omega Speedmaster, known primarily as a space watch, is also a fantastic choice, proving its versatility as a racing-related model.
Various other watches, including the Amida Digitrend, Omega Chronostop, and Vacheron Constantin American 1921, also shine as driver-focused pieces. Recent advancements like mechaquartz movements have birthed some striking, robust models. One such example is the fun and vibrant Bamford Mayfair 2.0, a colorful chronograph with an interchangeable case that’s perfect for any event. For our ultimate “one-and-done” watch for all car-related occasions, Mike advocates for the Heuer Carrera 2447, which he deems pure excellence. Balazs, on the other hand, champions the Monaco as the ultimate car watch.
Thank you for tuning into today’s episode! As always, feel free to share any topics you’d like us to cover in future episodes.
