Discover the Orient Star M42 Diver: A Dive Watch for the Ages
Celebrating 75 years of excellence, Orient Star has unveiled its latest masterpiece: the M42 Diver, a stunning addition to its Sports Collection. This Japanese dive watch is engineered to meet the rigorous ISO 6425 standard, ensuring it’s deemed a genuine “Diver’s Watch” with a depth rating of 200 meters. With such stringent testing, this timepiece is designed to perform reliably in life-saving situations. Yet, despite its rugged capabilities, the M42 Diver does not shy away from elegance, featuring a captivating blue-to-black gradient dial. This creation pays homage to the 1964 1st Edition, inspired by one of Japan’s earliest dive watches, the Olympia Calendar Diver. With bold indexes, a Broad Arrow hour hand, and a robust steel bezel, the new Orient Star is set to impress. Limited to just 700 pieces, this watch will be available for purchase this month. Let’s dive into the details!
A Glimpse of the M42 Diver’s Heritage
Last month, we shared exciting details about the remarkable M34 F8 Meteorite, which kicked off the 75th-anniversary celebration. Now, Orient Star has turned its gaze toward the ocean. The name M42 refers to the Orion Nebula, linking it to Greek mythology where Orion is the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. This release continues Orient Star’s rich tradition of celestial names, staying true to its legacy. Having had some hands-on time with this model, I’m impressed by its feel, especially given its price point of under €1.5k. The design closely resembles the original, providing a nice update from the 2023 2nd Edition.
In-Depth Look at the Orient Star M42 Diver 1964 1st Edition F6 Date 200m
The Orient Star M42 Diver beautifully balances vintage design influences from the 1964 version with contemporary flair. The circular-brushed stainless steel bezel enhances the utilitarian aesthetic of the watch, housed within a 41mm SUS316L steel case. A standout feature is the engraved, ink-filled five-minute markers, which enhance clarity while adhering to ISO 6425. The unidirectional bezel only turns counterclockwise to mitigate any accidental adjustments, ensuring that divers always overestimate their remaining time and surface safely.
The gradient dial subtly evokes the effect of sunlight reflecting off a starlit ocean surface. It showcases Orient Star’s signature power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, capable of counting down from 50 hours. The logo at 6 o’clock and the phrase “Automatic Diver’s 200m” add character, though the latter could detract from the overall neatness. I appreciate the oversized, luminous indexes, even if the date display at 3 o’clock disrupts symmetry—but the elegant white frame helps it blend in. The Broad Arrow hour hand paired with a precise minute hand enhances legibility in low-light conditions, while a white seconds hand adds a touch of flair.
Final Thoughts on the Orient Star M42 Diver: Specs and Pricing
One highlighted feature of the M42 Diver’s case is its thickness of 14.5mm. While not excessively bulky, it does stand out compared to other dive watches with the same 200m water resistance—like the Tudor Black Bay 58 and Breitling Superocean Heritage, both of which have profiles under 12mm. However, keep in mind that both of those models are three to four times the price of the Orient Star M42 Diver. Most Japanese dive watches tend to embrace thicker casings to comply with ISO 6425 standards. Even though the M42 Diver feels robust, it’s still quite wearable. The 20mm-wide five-row bracelet complements the rugged case design, featuring polished inner links. Although these polished links are part of the central steel piece and do not articulate, they add to the watch’s overall luxury feel. The clasp is secured with twin pushers and a safety latch, along with an extension for diving.
This limited-edition dive watch is powered by Orient Star’s in-house caliber F6N47, which boasts an accuracy tolerance of +25/-15 seconds per day, along with a generous 50-hour power reserve. Though the movement hides behind a solid steel screw-in case back, I don’t mind omitting an exhibition window for a dive watch. After all, functionality is key! With deep knurling, the screw-down crown offers easy grip and operation, even when using dive gloves.
The Orient Star M42 Diver 1964 1st Edition F6 Date 200m launches this month at a price of €1,299.99 / £1,129.99. For more details about this limited edition of 700 pieces, visit the Orient Star website here.
