Discover the Nivada Grenchen F77 Polar White MK1: A Timeless Limited Edition
Sometimes, simplicity speaks volumes, and not every watch needs flashy colors or intricate finishes. That’s the thought process behind the Nivada Grenchen F77 Polar White MK1, created by Ludovic Barrois from the French watch magazine Le Petit Poussoir and his friend Guillaume Laidet. One look, and you might find it hard to believe this elegant piece hasn’t graced our wrists before!
A Closer Look at the F77 Polar White MK1
In 2023, I also explored a Nivada Grenchen limited edition with a polar-white dial, known as the Super Antarctic, a collaborative effort with Ace Jewelers. While that timepiece featured a vibrant orange seconds hand, the F77 MK1 opts for a completely unembellished look, enhancing its timeless appeal—a sentiment echoed by the earlier limited-edition Yema Superman Tropical recently reviewed by Jorg.
Let’s dive deeper into what makes the F77 Polar White MK1 a standout.
Design Features of the F77 Polar White MK1
Barrois specifically chose the MK1 variant of the Nivada Grenchen F77 for its distinct characteristics, favoring the heavier, more angular lugs over the MK2’s smoother lines. The MK1 boasts a 37mm diameter stainless steel case, stretching 45mm lug-to-lug, with a thickness of 12.65mm that includes its double-domed sapphire crystal. That small difference in thickness, compared to its MK2 counterpart, is negligible in practical terms.
The hands on the MK1 are another highlight: unlike the dauphine hands of the MK2, the MK1 features baton hands that complement the applied hour markers beautifully, with luminescent capabilities for low-light readability.
The matte polar-white dial is exclusive to this MK1 version, setting it apart from the rest of the F77 lineup, many of which feature textured dials or opt for darker colors. If you’re on the hunt for a Nivada Grenchen F77 with a clean white aesthetic, this is your moment!
Movement and Water Resistance
At the heart of the Nivada Grenchen F77 Polar White MK1 lies a Swiss-made Soprod P024 movement. This automatic caliber boasts a power reserve of 38 hours, contains 25 jewels, and operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Featuring a screw-down crown for manual winding and setting, complemented by a screw-in, engraved stainless steel case back, this watch offers a solid 100m water resistance rating.
Unlike the MK2, the F77 MK1 doesn’t come with drilled lug holes, which may complicate bracelet swaps. However, this design choice keeps the prominent lugs looking pristine. The watch’s brushed and polished three-row bracelet features a push-button folding clasp with multiple micro-adjustment holes for a comfortable fit.
Wrist Experience
In my opinion, choosing the MK1 case enhances the F77’s character, offering a distinct look with its angular lugs. While it might be slightly less comfortable, as there’s a saying in Dutch: “Whoever wants to be beautiful must suffer a little.” The matte polar-white dial adds a touch of elegance that beautifully showcases the intricate facets of the case. It’s surprising that this version didn’t exist until now—it may have just become my new favorite!
At €1,420, the Nivada Grenchen F77 Polar White MK1 stands as a remarkable limited-edition Swiss timepiece, crafted by Le Petit Poussoir and Nivada Grenchen. But hurry, with only 33 pieces available, they won’t last long!
