Sunday Morning Showdown: Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop vs. Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch
Welcome to another exciting Sunday Morning Showdown! This week, we have a thrilling face-off between two Bioceramic titans. Daan will defend the classic Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch, while Thomas will rally behind the new Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop. Which collaboration reigns supreme? Let’s dive in!
The Royal Pop comes with a price tag of €385 to €400, depending on the variant. In contrast, the original MoonSwatch is a more wallet-friendly option at €275. We are indeed comparing different types of timepieces here, as the Pop isn’t a wristwatch, while the MoonSwatch certainly is. Still, the burning question remains: which of these Swatch collaborations did it better? We’ll let Daan and Thomas present their cases, and then the decision will be up to you!
Last Week’s Results
Before we jump into today’s showdown, let’s take a quick peek at the results from last week’s match-up. Jorg and Mike faced off with two recent retro designs, showcasing angular cases and bracelets. Jorg championed the King Seiko Vanac, while Mike defended the Tudor Monarch.
The results were intriguing. The King Seiko emerged victorious by a narrow margin of 52% to 48%, especially noteworthy since it’s priced a full €2,000 lower than the Tudor.
Scrolling through the comments, it’s evident that many favored the King Seiko for its integrated and cohesive design. However, opinions about the calibers were sharply divided. Some noted that excessive text on the dial cost the KS valuable votes. Now, let’s move on to today’s showdown!
Thomas: Representing the Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop
Good morning, Fratelli! And a warm hello to you, Daan. Today’s showdown might strike a chord with many, given the passionate debate surrounding Swatch’s Bioceramic collaborations. Whether it’s the MoonSwatch, the Scuba Fifty Fathoms, or the Royal Pop, emotions often run high. While I’d suggest we handle it delicately, I admit I’m also quite passionate about this topic.
On one hand, I respect the marketing brilliance behind these collaborations. In a watch industry that sometimes struggles for relevance, not many brands can create buzz like this. It undeniably draws the interest of younger generations, which we should celebrate as it nurtures new enthusiasts. However, there’s an ongoing question: how many of these young scalpers will transition into long-term collectors of mechanical watches? Only time will reveal the answer.
On the other hand, it’s disheartening to see masses of individuals trying to capitalize on a simple plastic gadget, resulting in fights and even vandalism. It raises a valid question: could Swatch and AP have managed the hype more wisely to genuinely foster interest in watch collecting? I felt uneasy about the MoonSwatch’s introduction back in 2022, and now more so with the Royal Pop’s launch.
The Case for Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop
Let’s pivot to the crux of this discussion. If given the choice, I would gladly choose the Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop. The primary theme here is ambition, and I have my reasons.
The MoonSwatch was bold, daring to reinterpret a high-end watch in a format accessible to many. While this approach may not have been as risky for Swatch, given its vast resources, it was nonetheless a gamble for Omega. We’ve heard reports that genuine Speedmaster sales surged due to the MoonSwatch craze, but we can only speculate about its long-term impact. Will those who sported a MoonSwatch feel compelled to upgrade in the future? Time will tell. The stakes are even higher for Audemars Piguet, as it operates at a more exclusive level.
However, the real ambition lies in the technical and creative elements that the Royal Pop introduces. Rather than simply mimicking a Royal Oak in Bioceramic, AP brought innovation by unveiling a manually wound version of the Sistem51 movement, complete with a power reserve indicator. Furthermore, Audemars Piguet played a crucial role in developing a new Nivachron hairspring that’s also utilized in their high-end watches. These details, although they may sound subtle, lend an air of credibility to the Royal Pop among aficionados.
Switching the design concept to a Pop format makes perfect sense. It not only pays homage to Swatch’s history but also keeps these collaborations off the wrist. While I’m curious about how third-party bracelets impact this choice, most Royal Pops will often serve as desk clocks or pocket watches. Overall, the Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop offers a more creative and lighthearted approach compared to the MoonSwatch. Sure, it costs €100 more, but with two sapphire crystals, a mechanical movement, and that fun pop-out mechanism, I genuinely believe it’s worth the additional price. Now, I’ll pass the mic to Daan for his defense of the MoonSwatch. Take it away, Daan!
Daan: Defending the Omega × Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch
Thank you, Thomas, and a warm good morning to all of you! I want to echo your sentiments about the marketing prowess of the Audemars Piguet and Swatch partnership. The level of hype was astronomical, turning heads among individuals who previously had little interest in watches. Friends and family began asking questions about how to snag their own Royal Pop. As a watch enthusiast, it’s fascinating to witness such a surge in interest in our field.
However, with such excitement comes the responsibility of managing it effectively. Swatch was surely aware of the frenzy that would follow after the MoonSwatch releases, and massive lines were already forming for various styles. Given this experience, one would hope that Swatch, along with AP, would have developed a better plan for handling the crowds.
Concerns About Image
While I wholeheartedly agree that the AP Royal Pop is a fantastic product both technically and creatively, it’s disheartening to see these innovations overshadowed by the tumult surrounding its launch. Swatch Group CEO, Nick Hayek, claimed that only a small percentage of stores faced issues during the launch and referred to the Royal Pop launch as a positive story. However, the chaos around it made it difficult to focus on the actual product; discussions often stray to how poorly the launch was managed. This is unfortunate, as I would have loved to celebrate the watch itself.
Alternative vs. Accessory
Let’s return to the watches themselves. The MoonSwatch is a traditional wristwatch, while the Royal Pop serves as a pocket watch — a format that most people no longer carry regularly. This shift means one must adapt to using and wearing the Royal Pop differently. You can drop it in your pocket, clip it to your bag, or even hang it around your neck. While this makes the AP Royal Pop more of a fashion accessory, the MoonSwatch remains a timepiece in regular rotation.
I’ve owned the MoonSwatch Mission to Saturn since its debut in 2022 and find it immensely wearable — especially when I want a lighter alternative to my heavier timepieces. In fact, I even purchased the new official rubber strap, which is far more comfortable than the stock option. Thus, the MoonSwatch has become a staple in my collection.
While the MoonSwatch is the more straightforward of the two, Swatch effectively crafted an authentic Bioceramic representation of the Omega Speedmaster — a task that has clearly resonated with many consumers.
