Discover the Elegance of James Lamb’s Linea Edition Watches
Let’s be real: how many of you had heard of James Lamb before this article? I certainly hadn’t! As I dove into researching this British artisan watchmaker, I was captivated by his craftsmanship. Known for his handmade silver watch cases and exquisite enameled silver dials, Lamb draws inspiration from nature with his Origin Series, where each watch reflects a different season and element. Now, he’s back with something special—the Linea Edition, created in collaboration with engraver Joanne Ryall and enameler Andy Roberts. This artisanal series showcases unique handmade silver cases, intricately engraved titanium dials, and luxurious 18K gold details, making each piece a true work of art.
A Journey into Watchmaking
James Lamb’s journey into the world of horology began after he completed his degree at the British Horological Institute. With 15 years of experience in the engineering technology sector, he took the plunge into designing and crafting watches in 2020. If you share my curiosity, I highly recommend checking out his website and Instagram page to see his stunning creations.
Meet the Artisans Behind Linea Edition
Joining James in this exquisite endeavor are Joanne Ryall and Andy Roberts. Ryall, a celebrated ornamental engraver, utilizes meticulous handcrafting techniques under a microscope. You can explore her incredible work on her website and Instagram, where she showcases everything from knives to watches.
Andy Roberts, known for crafting stunning enamel dials, has previously collaborated on projects like the De Rijke & Co. Guy Allen Amalfi Series. Together, these talented artisans have brought the James Lamb Linea Edition to life. Let’s explore the details!
Exploring the James Lamb Linea Edition
The Linea Edition is a striking departure from Lamb’s earlier designs, featuring a fully hand-engraved titanium dial highlighted with 18K gold accents. The handmade Argentium case showcases a new design with broad lugs that extend from the sides, offering a distinct aesthetic compared to the straight lugs of previous models. Argentium silver, known for its superior tarnish resistance and hypoallergenic properties, ensures a beautiful, bright appearance, enhancing its durability when compared to traditional sterling silver.
Measuring 40.5mm in diameter with a faceted mid-case, the watch features lugs that span 47.5mm and accommodate 22mm-wide leather straps. The Linea Edition also boasts a 12.8mm profile and a pressure-fit case back made of solid 940 Argentium silver, expertly engraved by Andy Roberts with a geometric motif and the James Lamb logo, filled meticulously with black and gold enamel. Inside, the high-grade Sellita SW210 hand-wound movement ticks at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offering a generous 42-hour power reserve.
Hand-Engraved Dials: A Visual Delight
The real showstopper? The hand-engraved titanium dials adorned with 18K gold inlays and a frosted ceramic sub-dial surrounded by a 14K gold rim. James had a tough choice between stainless steel and titanium for these dials. Ultimately, he chose titanium for its rich, dark tone, perfectly contrasting with the gold inlays.
Within the Linea editions, you’ll find three captivating designs:
- Mitsuba: This model takes inspiration from the Japanese word for “three leaves.” Its pattern reinterprets the asanoha motif, symbolizing growth and protection. Decorative layers of yellow, rose, and green gold adorn the leaves.
- Altair: Named after the brightest star in the Aquila constellation, this design features a Moorish-inspired geometric motif with bright yellow gold stars, symbolizing clarity and beauty.
- Regent: Showcasing British scroll engraving traditions, this model features fine details and a subtle layer of gold, truly encapsulating regal elegance.
All three models include an off-center frosted ceramic sub-dial complete with Arabic numerals and a James Lamb logo. Blued steel leaf-style hour and minute hands gracefully indicate the time.
An Impression from Afar
Though I haven’t seen these watches in person yet, their beauty is undeniable from afar. Each piece requires months of painstaking work, reflecting the combined expertise of three artisans. It’s fascinating to witness how James, Joanne, and Andy collaborate to create these breathtaking watches. While titanium may seem more suited for tool or dive watches, James’ choice enhances the contrast and elegance of the gold inlays. Personally, I find the Altair design captivating, but the Regent truly showcases the incredible skill of master engraver Joanne Ryall.
The James Lamb Linea Editions are limited to the trio’s production capacity, with each watch priced at €22,000. Interested in acquiring one? Visit James Lamb’s website for more details.
