Unveiling the Elegance: Louis Vuitton Tambour Convergence Guilloché
Last year, Louis Vuitton embarked on what Thomas aptly described as “a bold new effort.” He was spot on—the Tambour Convergence, featuring a stunning mirror-polished rose gold case, truly captured attention. Fast forward to LVMH Watch Week this year, and Louis Vuitton has taken it a step further with an enhanced version: the Tambour Convergence Guilloché. This iteration boasts a beautifully hand-decorated façade that shimmers with a rippling halo and an enchanting array of undulating rays. Let’s dive into the details of the new Louis Vuitton Tambour Convergence Guilloché.
Certainly, last year’s Tambour Convergence showcased Louis Vuitton’s prowess in crafting exquisite designs. However, the Guilloché version elevates the brand’s artistry to new heights.
Introducing the Louis Vuitton Tambour Convergence Guilloché
At first glance, much of the Tambour Convergence’s essence remains unchanged. The 18K rose gold case is still a stunning 37mm in diameter and 8mm thick. It showcases the collection’s signature tapered and brushed flanks, ensuring a confident presence on the wrist. The sculpted lugs, featuring hollowed-out sides with polished and sandblasted finishes, create a striking silhouette.
The tapered, signed, and knurled crown grants easy access to the LFT MA01.01 automatic caliber. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it boasts a 45-hour power reserve and features 26 colorless jewels. A sapphire crystal case back provides a glimpse of the caliber’s free-sprung balance and 18K rose gold rotor. When viewing from behind, the sandblasted bridges and meticulously polished chamfers are also on display.
The movement operates the continuously rotating hour and minute discs. Both gears turn clockwise, meaning the hours and minutes are displayed in reverse order. As Thomas mentioned in his previous article, getting accustomed to this might take some time. Fortunately, the broad aperture ensures that the next hour is always in sight, so you’ll never truly be left in the dark.
A Stunning Hand-Turned Facade
This year’s standout feature is undoubtedly the hand-crafted guilloché front. The hour and minute apertures remain, still inspired by the rising sun. However, Louis Vuitton elevates this theme with a striking arrangement of undulating rays and a mesmerizing rippling halo surrounding the façade. For these stunning circular patterns, LV employed a hand-turned rose engine from 1850, alongside a straight-line engine from 1935 for the center sunrays. Both machines have been meticulously restored at the brand’s La Fabrique du Temps and the engraving process underwent around 20 trials over six months before achieving perfection.
Interestingly, the façade has a slightly domed shape, adding complexity to the engraving process, as the artisan must meticulously adjust their pressure to ensure an even appearance. This also means making deeper cuts than visible initially, as the surface needs to be polished again post-guilloché application. On average, it takes around 16 hours for a skilled artisan to complete the exquisite decorations on just one watch.
First Impressions
Last year’s Tambour Convergence, with its wide aperture and fully mirror-polished finish, was already a showstopper. While I haven’t experienced the new Louis Vuitton Tambour Convergence Guilloché in person yet, it looks absolutely captivating in photos. I can only imagine how the guilloché detailing interacts with light, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The pressure on the artisan crafting these pieces must be immense—one small error could mean starting the entire process over. Thankfully, the wearer gets to simply enjoy the stunning results.
The new Louis Vuitton Tambour Convergence Guilloché is priced at €59,500 / US$58,500 / £51,500, complete with a blue calfskin strap and an 18K rose gold pin buckle.
