It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I last reviewed Farer’s World Timer collection, which at the time featured the green Foxe, blue Roché, and predominantly white Markham models. I remember the Foxe stood out for its subtlety. This new release introduces three additional versions, including the captivating burgundy Thorne, which is offered in either a natural stainless steel or gold-PVD-coated case — both variants radiate warmth and allure.
This variant pays homage to Robert Thorne, one of the first English explorers to set foot in North America, who also established trade connections with Portugal. The Thorne’s dial retains its elegant guilloché pattern and features land masses on the rotating world-time disc rendered in lighter tones, ensuring that the design remains harmonious and functional.
Large, raised Lumicast markers are prominently featured above the understated dial of the Thorne. These markers, alternating between Arabic numerals and baton indexes made from a blend of ceramic and X1 Super-LumiNova, add a modern twist to an otherwise classic design. The gold hour, minute, and seconds hands beautifully tie into the warm tones of the watch case, while the multi-time-zone functionality is showcased through a central disc rather than an additional hand.
Is Gold PVD Worth It?
So, what difference does the gold PVD coating make? In my view, a significant one! Farer’s World Timer has always struck a fine balance between elegance and functionality. While PVD coatings, especially in gold, aren’t universally appealing, in this case, it elevates the watch’s allure substantially. It doesn’t try to imitate a solid-gold watch; instead, the case appears more akin to bronze than traditional yellow or rose gold. Plus, the PVD coating will likely outlast both bronze’s tendency to patina and gold’s susceptibility to scratches.
The case doesn’t just boast a charming dial; it features a comfort-driven design. At 39mm in diameter (excluding the crowns) and a compact 45mm lug-to-lug length, it’s well-suited for most wrists. This structure also incorporates sharp lines that catch the light beautifully, while recessed areas provide depth and visual intrigue, giving the slightly darker case an understated elegance.
Inside the Watch: A Closer Look at the Movement
Under the hood, the World Timer Thorne Gold houses a modified Sellita SW331-2 automatic caliber. This latest version offers an improved power reserve of 56 hours compared to the older SW330-2 GMT. Farer has chosen to utilize this caliber in Elaboré grade while showcasing Top Grade finishing beneath a beautifully customized rotor. Instead of the traditional GMT hand that displays 24-hour time, this world timer cleverly utilizes that mechanism to drive a central disc along with accompanying numerals. The user can easily adjust this via the main crown located at the 3 o’clock position.
The secondary crown, positioned at 10 o’clock, rotates the outer city ring, enabling a quick readout of times from various cities around the globe. Each of the 24 positions on the inner bezel clicks gratifyingly into place.
Comfort and Wearability
The dimensions of the World Timer Thorne Gold perfectly suit my 17.75cm (7”) wrist. How a watch wears is significantly influenced by its thickness, and with an overall profile of 11mm, this watch strikes the right balance. Additionally, its sculpted case walls serve to disguise any perceived bulkiness. It wears comfortably, partly thanks to the thick burgundy leather strap that complements the watch’s color scheme. A thinner strap might create an off-balance feel, but the stock strap matches flawlessly in both color and size.
Other strap options with convenient quick-release spring bars are available for order, but none truly seem to match the elegance of the Thorne Gold. Farer even offers complimentary engraving on the rear of the watch, beneath the exhibition window, providing an added personal touch.

While not much has changed since I last explored the previous iterations of the World Timer back in 2024, the combination of the burgundy dial and gold-tone case indeed feels like a maturation over those two years. As a complete package, it presents a cohesive, understated elegance while still retaining the brand’s identified character.
