Experience the Magic of the Nordic Marine Instruments Lunør: A Watch Inspired by the Aurora Borealis
The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is one of nature’s most captivating displays. Watching its vibrant colors dance across the night sky is a must-do for many adventure-seekers. While I haven’t yet experienced the mesmerizing greens, reds, and purples firsthand, friends have told me that it’s truly magical. Inspired by this ethereal phenomenon, Nordic Marine Instruments has crafted the Lunør—a watch that captures the essence of Nordic night skies. With its innovative double-moonphase display and a stunning glow, I had the chance to explore what this unique timepiece has to offer.
My first impression of the Lunør was quite amusing. Initially, it arrived on a sleek bracelet that gave it a modern, everyday appeal. However, once I swapped it to the included leather strap, it transformed into a chic, contemporary dress watch. This versatility is something I commended Mick Jørgensen, the brand’s founder, on—few watches can switch styles this seamlessly. The Lunør made quite the impression, leaving me eager to delve deeper into its features.
Discovering the Details of the Nordic Marine Instruments Lunør
Let’s dive into the essence of this extraordinary timepiece. Unlike typical moonphase watches that leave the void between lunar cycles bare, the Lunør presents a strikingly different approach. This double-moonphase design becomes a real conversation starter. Between the two Super-LumiNova moons, a vibrant aurora—also crafted with Super-LumiNova—glides across the dial. As the luminous moon gracefully transitions, the northern lights come alive, adding an extra layer of charm to this innovative release.
Specifications That Shine
The Nordic Marine Instruments Lunør features a 39mm stainless steel case with a slim profile of just 11.8mm, a 48mm lug-to-lug, and an impressive water resistance of 100m. This is the same case used in their popular Søværn sports watch, which Dave reviewed in 2024. The case boasts sharp, angular facets that lend a modern feel, further enhanced by its brushed and polished finishes.
Initially, I received the Lunør on a stainless steel bracelet featuring a three-row Oyster-style design, complete with a folding clasp, screw links, quick-release spring bars, and an easy-to-use micro-adjustment system. Each watch will also come standard with a leather strap.
Stylish Dial Options to Choose From
NMI presents three stunning dial colors for the Lunør. The first, Atlantic Blue, is an elegant dark hue paired with a darker blue leather strap—definitely the most sophisticated choice. Next is Shore Gray, which comes with a dark gray strap. Lastly, the vibrant Sky Blue variant features a bright blue leather strap. Unlike the pre-production model I tested, the production leather straps will have quick-release spring bars for added convenience.
All About the Dial Design
The Lunør’s dials share a similar configuration. They feature a smooth outer ring with a printed minute track and applied hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova BGW9, which emits a striking blue glow in the dark. The hour indexes extend into a textured inner ring, highlighted by a polished steel detail between these sections. Most importantly, the sunburst-finished center showcases a large moonphase display on the upper half and a smaller “Måneblik,” translating to “moon view,” on the lower half, achieving visual balance.
Visible Aurora Borealis: Day and Night
The magic of the aurora borealis doesn’t just glow in the dark; it can be seen even in daylight. As the moon glides across the upper display, the aurora appears in a delicate light green hue. This thoughtful detail adds both color and character to the watch while serving as a reminder of this beautiful phenomenon. With one rotating disc responsible for both moonphase displays, the aurora also shines through the Måneblik aperture.
The heart of this visual marvel is powered by a modified Miyota 9015 movement, complete with a custom wheel that enables the double-moonphase display. This modification replaces the usual date complication, providing precision with a 28,800 vibrations per hour rate, 24 jewels, and a 42-hour power reserve. It’s a sturdy caliber that ensures the Lunør stays accurate, with a deviation of -10/+30 seconds per day.
Wearing the Nordic Marine Instruments Lunør: A Comfortable Experience
Now let’s talk about what it’s like to wear the Lunør. I found the bracelet sizing to be a breeze, thanks to the screw-fastened links and the toolless micro-adjustment system. The bracelet is fully brushed and feels substantial without being overly heavy. While it might not be the best bracelet I’ve experienced in a sub-€1,000 watch, it’s solid and comfortable. Once on my wrist, I couldn’t help but appreciate the overall quality, characterized by straightforward finishing and sharp details.
The main highlight, of course, is the stunning dial. Its balanced design and the added spectacle of the aurora borealis make it a joy to observe time and again. That said, the light green of the aurora might not pair as perfectly with the sky-blue dial.
While I didn’t get to see the other dial colors in person, I believe the darker blue and gray versions will harmonize better with the disc’s combination of dark blue and light green. One thing I genuinely appreciate is how modern the Lunør feels. Moonphase watches often evoke a traditional sense of style, but this one proves that they can embrace contemporary flair.
When worn, the well-proportioned case feels just right. The 48mm lug-to-lug is notable for a 39mm watch but didn’t bother me. For smaller wrists, the Lunør may feel slightly oversized; for my 18.5cm (7.3”) wrist, however, it was a comfortable fit.
Operating the Lunør: User-Friendly Design
In terms of practicality, the Lunør is easy to operate. After unscrewing the crown, it pulls out to two positions. A quick note: the unscrewing process on this pre-production model wasn’t the smoothest experience—there was a sensation of metal scraping against metal. However, I anticipate that the final production models will overcome this minor issue.
In the first position, you can easily adjust the moon phase forward and backward with satisfying clicks as you turn the crown. Normally, the Miyota 9015 includes a date complication, but this modified version allows for simple moon phase adjustments. The disc’s two moons mean adjusting one display synchronously sets the other. The beauty of the Lunør lies in how the aurora borealis subtly emerges as the moon fades—a delightful design element for nature lovers.
