The New Ressence Type 11: A Watch That Defies Convention
If you’re familiar with Ressence watches, you know that they combine avant-garde design with functionality. Created by Belgian designer Benoît Mintiens, these timepieces feature a unique method of displaying time using a series of rotating satellites instead of traditional hands. Until recently, the iconic Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) relied on a customized Swiss ETA 2892-2 movement. However, that’s all set to change with the launch of the Type 11, powered by the innovative integrated movement known as the RW-01.
Introducing the Ressence Type 11: Color Your Time
Like all other Ressence creations, the Type 11 boasts a Grade 5 titanium case. The watch’s shape is reminiscent of the Type 9, but it features a slightly larger 41mm diameter, providing an elegant presence on the wrist. Nearly all polished, it has a beautifully brushed case back and a compact 45mm lug-to-lug span, making it easy to wear. Plus, at just 11mm thick—including the domed sapphire crystal—it maintains a streamlined aesthetic.
When it launches, you can choose between three stunning dial colors: Pine (green), Sky (blue), and Latte (beige). Each dial showcases an array of brushed and grainy finishes that beautifully interact with light, providing a dynamic visual experience. The Type 11 includes essential indicators for hours, minutes, and running seconds.
However, the real standout feature is the innovative power reserve indicator. Instead of a traditional hand, Ressence employs a delightful series of ceramic microballs in different colors to indicate power levels—an imaginative touch that exemplifies Benoît’s creative flair.
Discovering the RW-01 Movement
Now let’s delve deeper into the groundbreaking RW-01 movement, which marks Ressence’s first integrated timepiece. Previously, Ressence watches utilized a modified Swiss ETA 2892-2 movement, resulting in some separation between the dial and the mechanics. The RW-01 changes that, offering a fully aligned and integrated experience. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this automatic movement features 40 jewels, 67 gears, and 18 ball bearings, along with two barrels that deliver an impressive 60-hour power reserve. This new movement closely mimics the appearance of the satellites shown on the dial, reinforcing the brand’s signature aesthetics.
On the case back, a small window reveals the graceful rotor spinning in action, while a lever for winding and time-setting eliminates the traditional crown—adding to the Type 11’s distinct look.
The case back is securely attached with four screws, ensuring the Type 11 maintains a water resistance rating of 3 ATM (30 meters).
Get Ready for the Launch at Watches and Wonders Geneva
I can’t wait to see the new Ressence Type 11 up close at the Watches and Wonders show in Geneva next week! I’m particularly excited to try on the watch and take a closer look at the ceramic microballs within the power reserve indicator. As a watch that’s filled with firsts, the Type 11 promises to be a captivating piece that sets new standards in horology.
The price for the stunning Ressence Type 11 with the RW-01 movement is set at CHF 23,000 (excluding VAT). Buyers can select from various strap options, including leather, rubber, and hybrid, or choose the sleek titanium Milanese mesh bracelet.
