Explore the Bold New Fortis Marinemaster M-44 Collection
When the latest Fortis Marinemaster M-44 models arrived on my desk, I had to double-check something: had it really been nearly five years since the Marinemaster collection made its debut? It was a bit shocking! While the name suggests a range of dive watches, Fortis views this collection as versatile companions for any outdoor adventure. The new pair of Marinemaster M-44 DLC watches brings a sleek, stealthy style to this adventurer’s lineup. I had the chance to dive into the details of these captivating new models.
A Quick Recap of the Fortis Marinemaster Series
When Fortis first launched the Marinemaster series, they introduced both 40mm and 44mm models. The 40mm version serves as the “entry-level” Marinemaster, first appearing in four vibrant colors. The larger M-44 kicked off with just the bold Amber Orange, but soon after, additional color options rolled out. Alongside its larger case and robust specs, the M-44 showcases a different dial design. Unlike the smaller models that typically feature a solid-color dial, most larger variants come with a black dial paired with a colored rehaut for the minute track. However, the latest M-44 models break away from that tradition.
Introducing the Fortis Marinemaster M-44 DLC: Gravity Black and Black Resin
Let’s dive into the two new models in detail. Both feature a robust 44mm stainless steel case that is 14.5mm thick, 48mm long, and rated for depths up to 500 meters. They’ve received a black Dianoir DLC coating, which boosts their surface hardness to an impressive 4,500 HV (Vickers)—about 20 times harder than traditional stainless steel.
This is the first time any Marinemaster model features a surface-hardening treatment to enhance scratch resistance. The stealthy vibe is further elevated by a black bezel and matching insert with engraved markings. Notably, you’ll find a lock at 10 o’clock that secures the unidirectional bezel when engaged.
Both models come with a textured black dial showcasing Fortis’s Horizon pattern, inspired by the “O” in the brand’s logo. The Gravity Black model contrasts its black dial with bright white details. Steel hour markers are filled with white Super-LumiNova, enhancing visibility. You’ll also notice a white ring along the edge and a white 60-minute/second scale on the black rehaut. The brand logo and lower text are also featured in crisp white. Look closely, and you’ll see that the crown and bezel lock are made of uncoated stainless steel.
A Warmer Touch with the Black Resin Model
The Black Resin model features a black DLC-coated crown and bezel lock, with a black dial that displays the same white ring at the base of the rehaut. The logo and text mirror the Gravity Black model in white, but the minute track features gold-toned numerals and hash marks.
The hands and markers are plated with 3N (yellow) gold and filled with beige Super-LumiNova X1, giving the Black Resin model a unique warmth. Interestingly, when viewed side by side, the Black Resin’s dial often appears a deep green, particularly in certain lighting conditions.
Both watches come on a 21mm textured black rubber strap featuring the distinctive Horizon pattern seen on the dial. A black Dianoir DLC-coated pin buckle adds the finishing touch. Thanks to the screw-in strap bars, changing the strap is a breeze. Fortis also cleverly coordinated the screw colors to match the crowns and bezel locks of each model.
The Kenissi-Developed Fortis Werk 11 Movement
Flipping the watches over reveals a matched color difference in the case back. The Gravity Black variant showcases a regular stainless steel back, while the Black Resin model features a black Dianoir DLC-coated back. Both models bear the same Ultra engraving and related specs.
Under the hood lies the Fortis Werk 11, a proprietary caliber developed with Kenissi and rigorously tested alongside Fortis. One of the standout features of this movement is its impressive robustness. The traversing balance bridge with double-point fixation enhances shock resistance and ensures precise balance positioning. Additionally, the automatic Werk 11 is a COSC-certified chronometer, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, utilizing 26 jewels, and boasting a stellar 70-hour power reserve.
Wearing the Fortis Marinemaster M-44 DLC Models
Despite their impressive dimensions, the Marinemaster M-44 watches wear remarkably well. The 44mm case feels substantial, yet the 48mm length ensures that they sit comfortably on my wrist. The stealthy aesthetic makes them appear smaller than they are. For my 18.5cm (7.3″) wrist, the size feels just right, and the high-quality black FKM rubber strap provides a perfect balance. I was pleasantly surprised by how well-proportioned these watches are.
Once on the wrist, the craftsmanship is evident. The solid feel and intricate details highlight the remarkable effort that went into designing and producing these timepieces. Out of all the Marinemaster M-44 variants, these two DLC models stood out as my favorites. The blend of a stealthy look with contrasting details is simply captivating.
Final Thoughts on the Fortis Marinemaster M-44 DLC Models
Choosing a favorite between the two models is no easy task. The black and gold combination is undeniably appealing, usually landing as my go-to pick. However, I found myself gravitating toward the rugged look of the Gravity Black model. In terms of adventure-ready performance, it feels more fitting.
That said, there’s no wrong choice when it comes to personal preference. Both watches serve as excellent options if you’re after a durable adventurer’s watch that’s stylish, reliable, and built to withstand the elements. The Marinemaster M-44 DLC Gravity Black and Black Resin are currently available for €4,950.
Wearing these two new additions to the Marinemaster collection quickly made them my favorites yet. I believe these models will resonate well with Fortis enthusiasts, offering a rugged appearance and enhanced scratch resistance thanks to the black DLC coating. These features make the Gravity Black and Black Resin versions remarkable standouts in the Fortis catalog.
