Discover the Sporty New Citizen Tsuyosa Shore Series: A Blend of Style and Functionality
When it comes to affordable entry-level watches, aficionados often bring up the Citizen Tsuyosa. Since its debut in 2022, this Japanese brand has seen the Tsuyosa line soar in popularity. Over the past four years, we’ve been treated to an array of stunning dial variations, from the original 40mm models to smaller 37mm versions, and a few interesting small-seconds designs. Most recently, Citizen has revamped the classic daily wearer into a chic sports watch with its new Tsuyosa Shore series. This exciting addition features a rotatable bezel and enhanced specifications, making it yet another contender for fan-favorite status. I recently had the pleasure of exploring these new offerings in detail.
The Journey of the Tsuyosa Shore Series
In a nutshell, the new Tsuyosa Shore can be described as the sporty sibling of the regular Tsuyosa, thanks to the new rotatable bezel. However, there’s more to it! Citizen has elevated the specs, boosting water resistance from 50 meters to an impressive 100 meters. This makes the new series perfect for summer adventures—whether you’re lounging by the pool or exploring the great outdoors. While these watches aren’t exactly dive watches, they are undoubtedly sporty summer essentials.
My last encounter with a Tsuyosa wasn’t a standard model; I had a chance to experience the Citizen × Seconde/Seconde/ Tsuyosa Limited Edition just a few months ago. This playful rendition of the Tsuyosa captured everything I love about this series. Both the standard 40mm Tsuyosa and the smaller 37mm series radiate an elegance that belies their affordable price. The commercial success further corroborates this quality. With the new Tsuyosa Shore, Citizen is venturing into new territory with four new models that promise to captivate fans while providing a transition from casual daily wear to stylish sports sophistication.
Hands-On Experience with the Tsuyosa Shore Models
Having gone hands-on with all four new models, I noticed that while they share the same mid-case as the inaugural Tsuyosa, the overall dimensions have slightly adjusted due to their sporty redesign. These new cases measure 40mm in diameter, 12.5mm in thickness, and 45mm in length, with the signature recessed push-pull crown positioned at 4 o’clock.
The case design flows seamlessly into the President-style bracelet, which features a combination of polished and brushed surfaces for a luxurious feel. The bracelet is equipped with a folding clasp, which enhances wearability and comfort.
Versatile and Stylish Design Elements
Each new model boasts a rotating bezel with an aluminum insert featuring a 60-minute scale, perfectly complementing the distinct dial colors, all protected by a sapphire crystal with a convenient date magnifier—another signature of the Tsuyosa series. The newly introduced models come in an array of colors and styles, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The NJ0230-59L features a stylish combination of steel and navy blue, while the NJ0231-56 blends steel with marine blue. The chic NJ0232-53X brings together gold and moss green, and lastly, the NJ0234-58X is a striking two-tone model with a coral red dial and bezel.
Dial Design: Elegant and Functional
The dial designs across the four models retain the classic elements but include some exciting updates. All feature a radially brushed sunray dial with applied hour markers. A noteworthy change is the minute track, which now offers intricate subdivisions for the seconds. This enhancement adds a layer of visual refinement that I really appreciate.
Another upgrade is the handset, which now features two larger sword-style hands instead of the baton-style hands found in the regular models. The lollipop-shaped seconds hand adds a distinctive flair, and all three hands come with a luminous filling for visibility.
Powered by the in-house caliber 8210, all models operate at 21,600 vph, feature 21 jewels, and have a 40-hour power reserve. The movement supports manual winding and hacking, making it a reliable choice for daily wear.
Wearing the Citizen Tsuyosa Shore Series
On the wrist, the Tsuyosa Shore models showcase their sporty character beautifully. While they retain many signature elements, they have evolved into stylish sports watches that balance visual appeal and functionality exceptionally well.
Despite a slightly increased thickness, these watches sit comfortably on the wrist, thanks to the flexible President-style bracelets and secure push-button deployant clasp. The polished center links complement the brushed outer links, underscoring that the Tsuyosa Shore targets a sporty aesthetic rather than a serious dive watch identity.
Final Thoughts on the Citizen Tsuyosa Shore Series
The new Citizen Tsuyosa Shore series is a refreshing take on the brand’s popular lineup, cleverly diversifying options for wearers. It’s an excellent choice for those who may not have warmed up to the original models but seek something more laid-back. Simultaneously, Tsuyosa Shore can complement its predecessor, offering a dynamic duo for different settings. Imagine taking both on summer holidays: the Tsuyosa Shore for daytime excursions and the regular Tsuyosa for evening events.
As for the various models, preference will ultimately determine the right choice for you. Among the four, I found the marine-blue version with its almost turquoise hue to be particularly striking. The gold-plated and two-tone options are certainly eye-catching, and their appeal might vary from person to person.
Pricing is also affordable, with the two steel models retailing for €329, the two-tone model for €349, and the gold-tone edition for €359. Overall, Citizen has done a fantastic job with the new Tsuyosa Shore series, and it’s clear there’s more excitement to come from this popular line. I can’t wait to see what else Citizen has in store for the future!
